Velma Ruth Smith

Arapahoe, Nebraska Velma Ruth Smith, age 86, of Arapahoe, Nebraska died on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, in Cambridge, Nebraska. She was born on July 2, 1925 at Oxford, Nebraska to Oscar & Bessie M. (Shield) Eman. She graduated from Oxford High School in 1942 at 16 years old. On August 26, 1944 she married George Missing at a Texas Army Base and to this union 5 children born; Susie, Richard, Betty, Robert, & Donald. On November 27, 1968 she married Truman (Lee) Smith in Arapahoe, Nebraska. They made their home in Arapahoe, were she worked for the Arapahoe Public Mirror for Jennie Cox for 4 years. She then went to work at Becton-Dickinson at Holdrege, Nebraska for 16 years. She and Lee would run Crossroads in Arapahoe of from 1976 to 1986. Then they moved to Denver, Colorado to work for Housing and Urban Development as managers of apartment complexes in the Lakewood subdivision for 8 years while winning a state high 5 Above Superior award. They would then become managers for Steve & Deb Rosen at Parkview Apartments next to Denver University for 12 years. Her husband Truman passed away on November 26, 1995. She moved to Arapahoe in 2004 and moved to Beaver City in 2008 to live with daughter Susie and husband Elmer. She spent the last several months at the Beaver City Manor in Beaver City, Nebraska. She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge, Royal Neighbors, V.F.W. & American Legion Auxiliary & First United Methodist Church of Arapahoe. She enjoyed being a Girl Scout leader from 1954 to 1965. She loved sewing, knitting, gardening, playing cards, crafts, and bingo. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Truman (Lee) Smith, Sons; Richard, Robert, & Donald Missing, Sister; Mirian, Thelma Arlene, Georgia, & Evalyn, Brothers; Harley & Carl, Brother-In-Laws; Otto Ludeke, Walter Bradock, & John Smith, Sister-In-Law Leora Eman She is survived by daughters Susie & husband Elmer Schaefers of Beaver City, Nebraska Betty June & husband Howard Johnson of Cambridge, Nebraska Grandson: Shawn Johnson Granddaughter: Shelley Johnson Great-Granddaughter: Mylea Sister: Donna Smith of Burbank, California Sisters-In-Law: Virginia Eman of Oxford, Nebraska - Carol Smith of Beaver City, Nebraska Irene Vandament of Arapahoe, Nebraska Brother-In-Law: Wendell Smith of Beaver City, Nebraska & many Step, Great, & Great-Great Nieces and Nephews, good friends, & neighbors.
