Robert “Bobby” D. Martin, age 90, of Arapahoe, Nebraska passed away Sunday, July 13, 2014 at the Phelps Memorial Hospital in Holdrege, Nebraska. He was born on June 9, 1924 on the family homestead south of Hendley, Nebraska to Robert L. & Louise M. (Kirste) Martin. Bobby attended school at Hendley High School and graduated with the class of 1941. He was married on March 10, 1945 to Burdella J. Batchelor, before enlisting in the Army in May of 1945 as a paratrooper and serving during World War II. After his service duty, he would return to farm with the family south of Hendley. They would live there until 1979, when they would move to Arapahoe, Nebraska. In 1964, he began working for the postal service as Postmaster in Wilsonville and Beaver City, Nebraska before becoming a rural mail carrier. He would retire in 1988. Because of health reason, he would move to the Beaver City Manor in 2013. He was a member of the Hendley United Methodist Church and later the United Methodist Church in Arapahoe. He was a member of the American Legion Post #96 of Arapahoe and a former member of the Arapahoe Lion’s Club & McCook Elks Club. Bobby enjoyed golfing, playing cards, traveling, and being with family. Preceded in death by his parents, son Randy, grandson Sean, sisters Merna (O.D.) Smith, Irma (Norval) Mart, Glenva (Ralph Hinkle & Edwin Wolzen) Hinkle, Neva (Floyd) Longsine, Sister-in-law Florence Gleason, Brother-In-Law Floyd Bud Conley, Father & Mother-In-Law Theo Lee & Mary Batchelor Survivors include his wife Burdella J. of Arapahoe, Nebraska Daughter: Sheryl & husband Brian Miller of Johnson Lake, Nebraska Sons: Robert Douglas & wife Joan Martin of Lincoln, Nebraska Stephen C. Martin of Beaver City, Nebraska 6 grandchildren: Jody (Glen) Thulin, Brant (Robin) Miller, Angie Clark, Shelly (Andrew) Nickerson, Rob (Sandi) Martin, Jill (Barrett) LaMay 3 Step great-grandchildren Sister-In-Law: Marian (Harvey) Ahrens of Kerrville, Texas Condolences or personal reflections can be left at wenburgfuneralhome.com Viewing and visitation will be Wednesday, July 16, 2014 from 10 AM till 8 PM at Wenburg Funeral Home, Arapahoe, Nebraska and prior to the service at the church. Funeral services will be on Thursday, July 17, 2014 at 2 PM at the First United Methodist Church, in Arapahoe, Nebraska with Pastor Becky Saddler, officiating. Interment will be at Hendley Cemetery at Hendley, Nebraska. The family is suggesting that memorials be given to the United Methodist Church of Arapahoe. Wenburg Funeral Home of Arapahoe, Nebraska is in charge of the arrangements.
