Hazel Lorene Sandell, lovingly known as “Tuffy,” passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at the age of 96, at Beaver City Manor in Beaver City, Nebraska.
Hazel was born April 9, 1929, in Harper County, Kansas, to Conrad and Opal (Sevier) Kollmorgen. She grew up on a farm west of Caldwell, Kansas and learned the values of hard work, perseverance, and devotion to family.
Hazel attended country school and later attended Caldwell High School, completing her sophomore year. From a young age, she was independent and capable, never afraid of hard work. She learned to drive and operate farm machinery, including tractors and combines, skills uncommon for young women of her time.
On September 4, 1945, Hazel was united in marriage to John O. Sandell in Anthony, Kansas. Together they raised three children: Donnie, Vernette, and Johnette. In their early married years, Hazel and John worked in custom combining, which eventually brought them to Beaver City, Nebraska, where they made their home and built lasting ties to the community. They were true partners, building their home with their own hands and creating a place known for warmth, hospitality, and good food.
Hazel was an excellent cook and took great pride in caring for her family. She was especially known for her Christmas dinners and for making everyone feel welcome, even with a house full of grandchildren.
In addition to her work on the farm, Hazel devoted 35 years of service to Norton County Hospital in Norton, Kansas, where she worked as a nursing assistant. She was trusted and respected by doctors and patients alike for her dedication, compassion, and strong work ethic.
After John’s passing on May 29, 1986, Hazel continued to care for the family farm, maintaining it with pride and determination until later in life.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Conrad and Opal Kollmorgen; her husband, John O. Sandell; and her siblings, Kenneth Kollmorgen, Judy Knight, Helen Lockwood, and Arthur Kaup.
She is survived by her children, Donnie (Christie) Sandell, Vernette Becker, and Johnette Martin, grandchildren: 9 great-grandchildren: 19 great-great grandchildren: 8, one sister: Sharit (Bill) McGinnis, one brother: Leonard (Linda) Lockwood.
Hazel Lorene Sandell will be remembered as a strong, capable, and kind woman who lived simply, loved deeply, and gave generously of herself. Her legacy of quiet strength and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
