Harvey Dale Herbert

Harvey Dale Herbert was born November 22, 1928, the 6th child of 8 children (4girls and 4boys) born to Elmer Ivan and Martha Mae (Crapson) Herbert. He was born on a farm in Hayes Co., Nebraska near Palisade, Nebraska. The doctor said he would not live. He told Harvey's parents to take him home and find an old woman who knew her stuff, maybe she could pull him through. So he was given to his Indian Grandmother, Susan Anna (Dinnel) Herbert. Apparently, she knew her stuff because he lived to be 88 years old.

Harvey grew up in McCook, Nebraska where he went through the 6t grade in school and quit to go to work for a construction company digging basements. He also worked for the REA digging holes for their posts and for the railroad.

He met and fell head over heels in love with Margaret Ida Amelia Breinig of Arapahoe. He hitch-hiked or jumped on to a train to see her whenever he could. On April 11, 1948, they were married in Arapahoe.

They lived in McCook for a short time and then made their permanent residence in Arapahoe. They were married for 63 years.

Harvey went to work in February of 1948 for the Nebraska Department of Roads mainly driving a maintainer until his retirement in May of

1990. He worked for the state for 42 years.

Harvey and Margret had six children. They took a nephew, Terry Keen, grandsons, Ben and Dale Ellis, Granddaughter Teresa (Ellis) Youngquist into their homes for their high school years.

Harvey is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his son, Dick, brothers and their spouses: Earl and Lila Herbert, Merle and Mavis Herbert, LeRoy and Kay Herbert, Sisters and their spouses: Wilma and James Boggs, Iretta and Elton Smith, Ann and Avis Winters, Millie and Virgil Daniels, a Great-great- granddaughter, Ashlynn Marie Lemburg,

11 nephews, and 4 nieces.

He is survived by his children, David Herbert of Arapahoe, Shelia and Charles (Von) Pruitt of Arapahoe, Patty and Roy Daughenbaugh of Beaver City, Nebraska, Donald and Margaret of Arapahoe, Daniel and Debra (D.J.) Herbert of Cozad, Nebraska, daughter-in-law Debra Herbert of Lincoln, Nebraska, brother-in-law Lyle and wife Janice Breinig of Arapahoe, sister-in-law Doris and Darrel Rauch of Parker, Colorado, 25 Grandchildren, 57 Great Grandchildren, 4 Great-Great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends to mourn his passing.
