Arapahoe, Nebraska Gordon L. Monie, age 80, of Arapahoe, Nebraska, passed away Thursday, November 8, 2007 at the C.A. Mues Good Samaritan Center, in Arapahoe, Nebraska. He was born on January 6, 1927 on the farm north of Franklin, Nebraska to Ernest & Minnie (Kennedy) Monie. He was the third of ten children. He was baptized in the State Line Congregational Church, south of Franklin, Nebraska. He attended school and graduated from Franklin High School in 1943. In January of 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he trained in radio school and was assigned to the Amphibious Division in the Pacific theatre. He was a radio operator on a L.S.T. and later communications ship the AGC-11. He was discharged in 1947. He continued his radio education by attending radio and television school in Omaha, Nebraska for two years. In December of 1947, he married Geraldine D. Yelken in Franklin, Nebraska. To this union five children were born. He worked on the Harlan County Dam as a Lineman and Electrician and was recalled to active duty in the Navy during the Korean War as a radio intercept technician, while serving one year in Adak, Alaska. Upon returning to Franklin, Nebraska after the war, he worked in the appliance and electronic business until 1957. He then moved to Arapahoe, Nebraska and worked for Lockenour Furniture as a manager of the appliance and electronic department. He later purchased this department and established the Arapahoe Service Center, operating this business until 1982. Later, he worked as the manager of ATC Communications and retired in 1996. He was active in the Arapahoe community serving on the Fire Department & Rescue Squad as the Ambulance and Rescue chief for over 25 years. He served on the Arapahoe School Board, City Council, Cemetery Board, Furnas County 911 Board, and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church & American Legion Post #96 of Arapahoe, Nebraska. He enjoyed his family, fishing, camping, and hunting. Preceded in death by his parents, wife Geraldine Dena Monie, & daughter-in-law Deanna Lee Monie, brother Keith Monie & sister Ilene. He is survived by his sons: Michael & wife Rose Ann Monie of Arapahoe, Nebraska Todd & wife LeAndra Monie of Arapahoe, Nebraska Daughters: Sheila & husband Jerry Wendland of Denver, Colorado Pamela & husband Larry Pfeiffer of Arapahoe, Nebraska Cindy & husband Dave Young of Denver, Colorado Brothers: Quinten & wife Paula Monie of Dallas, Texas Ernest & wife Bonnie Monie of Franklin, Nebraska Walter & wife Bonnie Monie of Omaha, Nebraska John Monie of Houston, Texas Gary & wife Rozanne Monie of Mesquite, Texas Sisters: Shirley & husband Robert Lennemann Sharon & husband Roger Schneider, Dallas, Texas Grandchildren: 10 Great-Grandchildren: 3 Condolences or personal reflections can be left at http://www.wenburgfuneralhome.com/ Viewing & visitation will be Friday, November 9, from 9 AM till 8 PM at Wenburg Funeral Home, Arapahoe, Nebraska and prior to the service at the church. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 10, 2007 at 10:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church at Arapahoe, Nebraska with Rev. David Otten, officiating. Burial will be at the Arapahoe Cemetery, Arapahoe, Nebraska. Military rites provided by the American Legion Post #96 of Arapahoe, Nebraska. Memorials are suggested for the Arapahoe Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department, American Heart Association, & American Cancer Society. Wenburg Funeral Home, of Arapahoe, Nebraska is in charge of the arrangements.
