Carl Richard DeVries, age 89, of Cambridge, Nebraska formerly of Beaver City, passed away Monday, December 7, 2015, at the Cambridge Manor. He was born February 22, 1926, at rural Arapahoe, Nebraska to Tobias and Elsie (Hein) DeVries. Carl attended school at Furnas County rural school District 12 and then continued his education in the Arapahoe Public Schools and graduated with the class of 1944. After high school he was drafted into and served two years in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theatre. He married Audre Butenschoen at the First United Methodist Church in Arapahoe on August 14, 1949. To this union four children were born; David, Curtis, Bruce, and Ann. Carl and Audre own a farm northeast of Beaver City, NE and farmed and raised livestock for 38 years while raising their family there. After retirement, he helped build the Gazebo in the Beaver City Park, volunteered 1500 hours in the Yuma Regional Health Center in Yuma, AZ, and worked 7 summers at the Alaska State Park in Haines. He was always working in carpentry and helped remodel the First United Methodist Church in Beaver City, and built his own house. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Beaver City, Past Grange Master, Charter Lions Club member, NRD and Beaver City Public Schools board member. He was a seventh degree member of the National Grange. He was preceded in death by his son Bruce, parents, brother Wayne and sister-in law Marilyn (Johnson), brother Jack, sister Phyllis Alexander and husband Stanley, brothers-in-law Raymond Bockerman, Richard Frogge and Harry Wilson, and sister-in-law Diane (Haussler). He is survived by his wife Audre DeVries of Cambridge Sons: David & wife Joni DeVries of Ogallala Curtis & wife Catherine DeVries of San Diego, CA Daughter: Ann & husband Buddy Schwartz of Angel Fire, NM Sisters: Mary Bockerman of Arapahoe, Dorothy Wilson of Inland, Elsie Mae Frogge of Grand Island Brothers: Bud & wife Gwen DeVries of Arapahoe, Glenn & wife Jo DeVries of Trumbull Leonard & wife Wyoma DeVries of Inland, Harold & wife Kathy DeVries of Lincoln Charles DeVries of Arapahoe Grandchildren: Andy and wife Laura DeVries, Nancy and husband Mike Hansen, Marcy and husband Zachary Thompson, Kimberly and husband Zachary Stahly. Great grandchildren: Raelyn, Ryanna, Michael, Reegan, Cody, Cole, Johnathan, Aiden, Rihanna, Oakley, Malcolm, and Lincoln. Numerous nieces and nephews Condolences or personal reflections can be left at wenburgfuneralhome.com. There will be no viewing or visitation as cremation has been chosen. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2015, at 2 PM at Heritage Plaza Chapel in Cambridge and at 4 PM at the First United Methodist Church in Beaver City, NE with Pastors Becky Saddler & Bill Weaver, officiating. Private family inurnment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Beaver City, Nebraska. Wenburg Funeral Home of Beaver City, Nebraska is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Southern Valley FFA.
